9th Annual Convention of the Trivandrum Medical College Alumni Association on 1st & 2nd March 2013.

Over 400 families of medical professionals graduated from this college had gathered here for the event. The participation was overwhelming including many doctors even from the 1st batch (1951)- Dr.K.V. Krishnadas and Dr. Balaraman Nair, to name a few and also from abroad. The convention was held at the Diamond Jubilee Alumni Auditorium. On the first day the convention was inaugurated by Hon. Speaker Sri. G. Karthikeyan. The inaugural ceremony begun with brief memorial service in remembrance of recently departed faculty and Alumni members. A cultural wing for medicos named THARAM to showcase the artistic talents of the medicos was inaugurated by Sri. Rishi Raj Singh IPS. Next was the inauguration of a Student Support Centre dedicated to the memory of the late. Dr. P. Ambika, Prof. of Physiology, by Sri. Biju Prabhakar IAS, District Collector. All three eminent dignitaries spoke on the current medical scenario, the profound contributions of doctors and the role of the alumni in improving medical education.  Dr. Subhadra Nair, Rtd. Prof. and Head of Obs. & Gyn. Dept. who was recently selected to be awarded Padmasree by the Govt. of India was honored on the occasion. This was followed by a cultural extravaganza with performances by medicos cutting across age barriers and professional status. The Skit “Rpt all (Repeaters)” directed by Dr. Thomas Mathew dealt with the problems arising from the entrance examination culture among students right from Secondary School level to the Postgraduate Medicine level and ultimately to their family life. The social satire had the audience thinking and enjoying at the same time.

The second day was entirely dedicated to academic discussions including the P.K.R. Warrier memorial oration by Dr. Y.A. Nazar, eminent cardiac surgeon of Travancore Heart Institute, Kollam the topic being “Cardiac Surgery – a Dying star or Supernova”, a talk on Bioinformatics by Mrs. Shivina Kumari, Director of CIST, USA and the “Dr. P. Ambika memorial lecture on Teacher Student relationship” by Ms. Reshma Sara Thomas (student). The highlight of the day was a seminar on “Preventive Vaccination” by a multidisciplinary panel of experts that generated much interest and cleared doubts on the topic. The day came to an end with the general body meeting of the alumni association that elected the new president Dr. Sahadullah, 1963 batch.
