A Man of Many Talents - Dr. K. K. Mathew

Dr. K. K. Mathew is a renowned physician, graduated from Trivandrum Medical College in 1968 and passed M.D. in 1973 at Maulana Azad Medical college, New Delhi. He is also a medical scientist and English Poet of international repute. He is also a noted novelist, spiritual thinker and orator. After discarding all better prospects, he chose to serve rural population since the past 44 years. He was the chief Physician at St.Thomas mission hospital Kattanam from 1974 to 1985. Since then he is serving at Kayamkulam.

Some of his clinical observations were quoted in prestigious international journals and that are original in medical science. The important clinical observations are

1. He put forward a theory that anaerobic bacteria is the causative organism for the dreadful disease Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and proved that the drug Metronidazole is effective in the treatment of it. 30 years after his publication of paper, Tabibian and team of Mayo Clinic North America corroborated Dr. Mathew's clinical observations.
    
2. He proved for the first time, Alphacalcidol is effective in the treatment of Cervical spondylosis.
    
3. He showed for the first time that Sesame oil can raise HDL level to an abnormally high level. He introduced for the first time a new condition Called “Hyper High Density Lipoproteinemia”.
    
4. He proved that Imipramine is effective in a type of persistent of vomiting which is resistant to all other drugs.
    
5. He proved that a combination of Aspirin and Hydroxy urea is effective in the treatment of Essential Thrombocythemia.
    
6. He proved for the first time that the bacteria Micrococcus Urea can decompose Blood urea.
    
7. He presented for the first time, cases a special type of pneumonia where the patients develop septic shock on the second day.
    
8. He has presented for the first time that Horse bite can produce nerve paralysis which is reversible.

Dr. Mathew practices medicine in a special way since the past 34 years. He has kept a box on his table and patients can put fees in the box, whatever they like. All poor patients are treated free

Dr. Mathew was awarded as the best doctor of the state by the state government in 1997. It is worth noting that Dr. Mathew did his researches in a rural area without any advanced research facilities.

He has written 28 books, of which 9 are English collection of poems.

Last month Dr.Mathew received 4 international awards for his poems.

1. The international poetry group ‘Motivational Strip’ awarded Dr.Mathew as the one of the best 9 poets above the age of sixty, from 90 countries.
    
2. The international poetry association for modern poets ‘Modern Poet’s Poetic Tone’ selected Dr.Mathew as one of the best 10 rising modern rising poets in the world.
    
3. The international poetry group ‘River of Poetry ’ awarded Dr.Mathew with the title “Champion of The World”.
    
4. The international poetry group ‘Poetry for Peace’ named its first batch of products for sale in international market, after Dr. K. K. Mathew's name and his three lines poem printed on it.
